Why a guide makes the difference here
Manuel Antonio is small and busy, and the animals are used to people, so you might expect them to be easy to see. Monkeys and iguanas are. Most of the rest is not. Two-toed and three-toed sloths sleep motionless high in the trees, and frogs, bats and owls hide by day. Guides trade information on where animals are each morning and carry a scope that brings a sloth 20 metres up into clear view.
On your own you will see the park. With a guide you will understand it.
When going alone is the better call
- You have already done a guided walk elsewhere in Costa Rica and mostly want the beaches.
- You are visiting late in the morning, when guided groups crowd the scopes on the main trail anyway.
- Your budget is tight and you would rather spend it on a mangrove kayak or a catamaran.
How to see more without a guide
- Arrive at 7:00 am. Animals are more active and the trail is quiet.
- Walk slowly on Sendero El Perezoso, the flat boardwalk named after the sloths.
- Watch where guided groups stop. If several scopes point at the same tree, there is usually something there. Look up, keep your distance and don't block their view.
- Bring binoculars. Even a small pair changes what you see.
- Listen. Howler monkeys and the rustle of capuchins give away where to look.
- Never feed the animals, and keep your food and bags closed on the beach.

Frequently asked questions
Is a guide mandatory in Manuel Antonio National Park?
No. Unlike Corcovado, Manuel Antonio does not require a guide. You only need a ticket bought on the SINAC portal.
Can you see sloths in Manuel Antonio without a guide?
Sometimes, but it is hard. Sloths sit still high in the canopy and look like a clump of leaves. Guides with spotting scopes find them far more often.
Is it OK to look through other groups' scopes?
Ask first. Some guides are happy to share a quick look; others are working for paying clients. Watching where groups stop and point is fine, but don't crowd them.
