Facts checked October 2026 by the Manuel Antonio Travel Guide team
What a guide actually adds
The park's main trail is wide and easy to follow, so you are not paying for directions. You are paying for eyes and optics. Guides carry a spotting scope on a tripod and know where the resident sloths, owls and bats roost this week. Most visitors who walk alone see monkeys and iguanas; most who walk with a guide also see sloths, frogs, snakes and birds they would never have picked out of the canopy.
A good guide will also set up the scope so you can take a photo through it with your phone, and explain what you are looking at rather than just pointing.
The four formats
| Format | Group size | Entrance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small-group walk, entrance included | Usually up to 10–12 | Included | First visit, no ticket yet |
| Guide only | Small group | You bring your own ticket | Already hold a SINAC ticket |
| Private guide | Just your party | Often not included | Families, photographers, slow pace |
| Tour with hotel pickup | Varies | Varies | Staying in Jacó, Los Sueños or up the hill |
Prices vary by operator, season and whether the entrance (US$18.08 per adult in October 2026) is built in, so compare like with like. A tour that looks cheap often just excludes the ticket.

After the walk
When the tour ends you are inside the park with a valid ticket. Most people walk on to Playa Manuel Antonio, a sheltered cove that is the calmest place to swim, or to the longer Playa Espadilla Sur. Keep your bag closed and in sight: the capuchin monkeys and raccoons on the beach are experienced thieves. Don't sit under the manzanillo trees, whose sap burns skin.
