The honest answer
A day trip works if San José is your base and you have one free day. You will see the park, probably sloths and monkeys, and swim at a beach inside it. What you lose is the early-morning park, the slow afternoon and any second activity.
If you can spare a night, stay in Quepos or Manuel Antonio instead. Read how to get to Manuel Antonio for the bus, shuttle and driving options.
What the day looks like
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5:30–6:00 am | Hotel pickup in San José |
| About 7:30 am | Breakfast on the way |
| About 9:00 am | Tárcoles River bridge, crocodiles from the walkway |
| 10:00–11:00 am | Arrival at Manuel Antonio, guided walk in the park |
| Early afternoon | Free time at Playa Manuel Antonio, then lunch |
| Late afternoon | Drive back; traffic into San José can add an hour |
Times are typical and set by the operator, who confirms them after booking.
Group tour or doing it yourself
On a guided day tour you skip the SINAC portal, parking and driving back tired. You give up flexibility: you arrive mid-morning with the crowds and leave when the van leaves.
On your own, the Tracopa bus or a shared shuttle takes three to four hours each way, so the park visit gets short. A rental car gives you the most control, but the last stretch back after dark is not fun. Either way you must buy your park ticket online in advance.
Make the day count
- Never on a Tuesday. The park is closed.
- Bring your passport. Rangers check it against the ticket.
- Pack swimwear and a towel for the beach inside the park.
- No food in the park. Bags are checked; water in a reusable bottle is fine.
- Book early in the dry season, December to April, when tours and tickets sell out.
If you can stay longer
With two or three days you can do the park at 7:00 am, the Damas Island mangroves and a night walk. Our 3-day itinerary shows how, and best tours in Manuel Antonio lists what to book once you are there.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a day trip from San José to Manuel Antonio?
About 12 hours. The drive is roughly three hours each way, plus breakfast, a stop at the Tárcoles crocodile bridge, two to three hours in the park, lunch and the return.
Can you do Manuel Antonio on a Tuesday?
No. The national park is closed every Tuesday, so a day trip on a Tuesday cannot enter it. Pick any other day.
Is it better to stay overnight in Manuel Antonio?
If you can, yes. Arriving the day before lets you enter the park at 7:00 am, when it is cooler and quieter, and leaves time for the beach or a night walk.
Does a day tour include the park ticket?
The tour we link includes the entrance, breakfast and lunch. Always check the listing's inclusions, because some day trips only cover transport.
